SPECIAL IN SITU VANE TESTS TO INVESTIGATE THE SHEAR STRENGTH CHARACTERISTICS OF NORWEGIAN MARINE CLAYS

THE NORWEGIAN GEOTECHNICAL INSTITUTE HAS CARRIED OUT A SERIES OF VANE TESTS TO ESTABLISH THE IN SITU SHEAR STRENGTH OF QUICK CLAY. THE AIM OF THE TESTS WAS TO INVESTIGATE WHETHER THE SHEAR STRENGTH WAS DEPENDENT ON THE ORIENTATION OF THE SHEARING PLANE AND ON THE RATE OF DEFORMATION. AN INVESTIGATION OF THE EFFECT OF ANISTROPY CAN BE MADE BY USING VANES WITH DIFFERENT HEIGHT/DIAMETER RATIOS, SINCE THE SHEAR STRENGTH MEASURED IS MADE UP BOTH OF VERTICAL AND HORIZONTAL STRENGTHS TO VARIOUS DEGREES. THE RESULTS CAN BE PLOTTED IN SUCH A WAY THAT THE VERTICAL AND HORIZONTAL STRENGTHS RATIO CAN BE READ OFF DIRECTLY. /RRL/
