The prediction of the coefficient of friction from surface texture measurements
This paper demonstrates that it may be possible to predict the hysteretic component of tyre road friction for any particular speed of sliding from surface texture measurements and from the frequency response of the damping factor of tyre tread rubber. The method used for measuring and characterising the road surface texture employed in this study appears to be most apt for the prediction of hysteretic friction. It was also shown that hysteresis in the tread rubber was responsible for the major component of tyre road friction (a).
