The development of pvc/ tar binder for surface treatments in hot climates

In this paper factors are described which affect the formulation of the tar for use in surface treatment maintenance in hot climates. Changes in tar composition during service were observed and the results indicate that a low volatile tar should be used. It is also apparent that low volatile tar blends are most affected by addition of pvc with respect to improved properties and performance. The addition of pvc is considered to improve the properties of tar in two ways: (a) by increasing the viscosity it permits an increased proportion of heavy low volatile oil to be used in the tar blend; and (b) it results in a tar having superior rheological behaviour. This paper also includes: (a) methods for the manufacture of pvc/ tar blends; (b) a description of the effects of hot storage on the properties of the binder; and (c) a discussion on the importance of surface treatment techniques in the application of pvc/ tar (a).
