An in situ method for determining the elastic parameters of pavement materials by an ultrasonic technique

The elastic parameters (shear modulus, poisson's ratio and young's modulus) of pavement materials have been determined by measuring the propagation time of an ultrasonic wave transmitted through the material. The transducer excitation gives rise to both a dilatational wave and a shear wave. The velocities of these two waves are measured over a number of different path lengths. This procedure eliminates the inherent delay in the transmitter and receiver transducers and enables the actual delay time in the material to be determined. These results enable the elastic parameters to be calculated (a).
