TORSIONAL HYSTERESIS IN PLASTIC CLAY AND ITS INTERPRETATION

THE RHEOLOGICAL BEHAVIOR OF PLASTIC CLAY UNDER SINUSOIDAL CYCLIC TORSIONAL STRAIN WAS INVESTIGATED. STABLE, WELL- DEFINED HYSTERESIS LOOPS WERE OBTAINED AFTER 10 TO 15 CYCLES THE AUTHORS INTRODUCE A MATHEMATICAL MODEL, PROPOSING ELASTIC AND VISCOUS ELEMENTS IN THE CLAY IN VARIABLE BUT COMPLEMENTARY PROPORTIONS, RELATED TO ELASTIC STRAIN ENERGY IN THE SPECIMEN. THE MODEL CORRELATES WELL WITH EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS AND CAN BE EXTENDED TO CLAYS OF NORMAL WORKING CONSISTENCY. /RRL/A/
