Spiralled interchange ramps
This paper develops appropriate design criteria for a single spiral ramp system that is amenable to any generalised type of interchange design. The single spiral ramp design system is heuristically shown to optimise design based on its unique ability to accommodate both the vehicular speed and directional modifications required with all interchanges. Twenty sets of data representing a wide range of design values for intersections requiring grade separated facilities comprised the input for computer analysis with the present and proposed methods of design. Results indicated that the proposed method is economically superior to the present method in many cases using 'construction cost' as a comparative parameter. Arguments are presented to show the superiority of the single spiral method with regard to indirect costs, vehicle operation and driver trauma (a).
