A quick method of measuring the surface texture of aggregate
Various existing methods of measuring the surface texture of aggregates are reviewed and it is shown that none of them are satisfactory as quick routine tests. A new instrument capable of measuring surface texture quickly and easily is described, and is shown to be capable of giving measures of surface texture which, although not completely unique, are a considerable advance in this respect on previous methods. The results of surface texture measurements on a number of different stones are given, with the stones in various states of wear or polish at different stages in the polished stone coefficient test. The relationship is given between the measured surface texture and the coefficient of friction of the samples, in the various stages of polishing, as determined by the polished stone coefficient apparatus (a).
