TRIAXIAL COMPRESSION OF A COHESIVE SOIL WITH EFFECTIVE OCTAHEDRAL NORMAL STRESS CONTROL
THE INFLUENCE OF THE FIRST INVARIANT OF THE EFFECTIVE STRESS TENSOR ON THE DEVIATORIC RESPONSE OF A COHESIVE SOIL IS INVESTIGATED MATHEMATICALLY AND A REPORT ON EXPERIMENTAL WORK IS PRESENTED IN WHICH A REMOULDED ILLITE CLAY WAS STUDIED. CONTROLLED TRIAXIAL COMPRESSION TESTS SHOWED THE DILATATIONAL STATE OF STRESS, AS EXPRESSED BY THE EFFECTIVE OCTAHEDRAL STRESS, INFLUENCES THE DEVIATORIC STRESS-STRAIN RESPONSE. DEVIATOR STRESS AND ULTIMATE SHEAR STRENGTH INCREASED WITH AN INCREASE IN EFFECTIVE OCTAHEDRAL STRESS. HYPERBOLIC REPRESENTATION OF THE STRESS-STRAIN RESPONSE PROVIDES A CONVENIENT METHOD FOR OBTAINING A MEASURE OF THE ULTIMATE SHEAR STRENGTH USING RESPONSE OF STRESS STATES OTHER THAN FAILURE. /RRL/
