CHEMICAL ANALYSIS OF KENPER MARL' INFLUENCE OF IRON OXIDES ON INDEX PROPERTIES

FROM EXPERIMENTAL WORK IRON OXIDE CONTENT AND THE RATIO OF IRON OXIDE TO CLAY ARE PLOTTED AGAINST LIQUID LIMIT, PLASTIC LIMIT AND PLASTICITY INDEX. IT IS CONSIDERED THAT THE DEGREE OF AGGREGATION OF SILICATES IN THE MARL IS A FUNCTION OF THE CEMENTING GELS AND OF THE TYPE AND AMOUNT OF THE SILICATES. AGGREGATION IS NOT A DIRECT FUNCTION OF IRON OXIDE CONTENT AND THE INFLUENCE OF IRON OXIDES IN KENPER MARL REDUCES ITS INDEX PROPERTIES. UNLESS LABORATORY TREATMENT OF THE SOILS CAN BE MADE EQUIVALENT TO TREATMENT IN THE FIELD, COMPACTION AND SHEAR BEHAVIOUR CANNOT BE SAFELY PREDICTED FROM LABORATORY TESTS. /RRL/
