Coastal sand dunes and estuarine formations in relation to urban development
The major problems involved in the construction of modern urban facilities in a hostile environment during the development of Cairns city is reviewed. The paper deals with some aspects of construction met by the local government engineer and includes notes on foundations, drainage, land use, town planning, road construction and essential services as these relate to topography. Particular emphasis and detail is placed on road construction in a terrain and climatic environment possibly unique in Australia at present but which will be eventually met with throughout the future development of the coastal megalopolis of north Queensland (a).
