SOIL PARTICLE SIZE BY TIME-WEIGHT ACCUMULATIONS OF SEDIMENTATION

AN INVESTIGATION WAS CONDUCTED AT SOUTH DAKOTA UNIVERSITY OF THE METHOD FOR MEASURING THE AMOUNT OF MATERIAL THAT SETTLES OUT OF A SUSPENSION IN VARIOUS TIME INTERVALS. THE TESTS FOR SOILS PARTICLE SIZE BY SEDIMENTATION ARE BASED ON STOKES LAW FOR THE VELOCITY OF FALLING PARTICLES. WEIGHING EQUIPMENT DEVELOPMENTS AIDED IN THE MORE ACCURATE DETERMINATION OF THE TIME-WEIGHT ACCUMULATIONS OF SEDI- MENTATION. CURVES WERE PREPARED FOR THE DETERMINATION OF PARTICLE SIZE FROM FREE-FALL TIME. GRADATION CURVES MAY BE FOUND BY DETERMINING TIME INTERVALS OF SEDIMENTATION FOR VARIOUS PERCENTAGES OF THE TOTAL SAMPLE.
