Methods of specifying and controlling compaction
This paper discusses the means of specifying and controlling the compaction of earthen materials for highway construction. The specification of requirements in terms of a desired 'end result' or a preferred 'method' is examined in the light of the test and inspection methods available. Particular attention is directed to the practical problems of determining and allowing for the inherent variability of construction materials and methods and of sampling and testing procedures.
