The effect of commercial development on road accidents within Sydney metropolitan area
It is generally accepted that the occurrence of accidents is related to traffic volumes. When considered in relation to the development of adjoining land there is evidence to suggest that this may be a linear relationship. This is indicated from a study of accidents occurring on various sections of state highways and main roads within the Sydney metropolitan area with differing land usage. Investigations indicated that the relationship established is independent of the number of lanes on multilane roads. Further, the increase in the accident rate found to exist in areas with commercial and industrial development is influenced largely by the number of accidents occurring at intersections (a).
