Pavement evaluation using the benkelman beam

Published reports omitted important considerations which could influence measurement by the benkelman beam of deflection and curvature of flexible pavements under load. In particular it was considered that in situ moisture content and in situ density of the component soils of the pavement and subgrade would have considerable effect on the magnitude of the measurements. This article is a modification of an internal report of a pilot investigation whose primary object was to determine a correlation between moisture content, density and deflection. This investigation failed to find such a correlation but did indicate that the benkelman beam can be a useful tool in pavement evaluation when used with an appreciation of its advantages and disadvantages (a).
