Note on vehicle stability
For the linear model of a rigid vehicle it is seen that for both steady state and transient motion the stability is determined by the 'static margin'. This model is extended to the case of a rigid vehicle with non linear tyre characteristics and the effects of the variation of tyre pressures, on the motion of the vehicle in a steady state turn, are considered. A survey of tyre pressures on volkswagen vehicles shows that some vehicles have greatly reduced stability by not using the tyre pressures recommended by the vehicle manufacturer (a).
