INTERSECTION STUDIES USING LOW-ALTITUDE AERIAL PHOTOGRAPHY

THE TECHNIQUE WAS DEVELOPED TO MEET THE DEMAND FOR EXACT DATA FOR THE TOPICS PROGRAM. THE PHOTOGRAPHS WERE TAKEN FROM 1000 FEET AND ENLARGED TO CONVENIENT SCALE, TO PROVIDE A PICTORIAL RECORD OF DRIVING PRACTICES AS INDICATED BY USE MARKS IN TRAFFIC LANES. SPECIAL CONSIDERATIONS AND PROCEDURES ARE DESCRIBED, AND PREVIOUS USES MENTIONED: PAVEMENT AND PAVEMENT MARKING EVALUATION, TURNING LANE EVALUATION ON THE BASIS OF SHOULDER USAGE, TURNING RADII AND GEOMETRIC IMPROVEMENT EVALUATION, IDENTIFICATION OF OBSTRUCTIONS AND IMPROVEMENT OF SIGHT DISTANCE, ILLEGAL PARKING IDENTIFICATION, AND TRAFFIC SIGNAL PLACEMENT EVALUATION. COSTS ARE ABOUT THE SAME AS FOR A TWO-MAN FIELD MAPPING CREW.
