The effect of right turning vehicles on saturation flow through signalized intersections
This paper describes a theoretical method using computer simulation for estimating the reduction in saturation flow through a signalized intersection due to the presence of right turning vehicles. The simulation model is applicable to both vehicle actuated and fixed cycle control. In addition to a given geometrical layout, four parameters are known: (a) the volume of the given flow, (b) the percentage of right turners, (c) the volume of the opposing flow, and (d) the percentage of right turners in the opposing flow. With the setting of the signal unchanged, a greater flow without right turners, and one which gives the same delay as the given flow, is determined. A regression analysis gives saturation flow in terms of the four parameters (A).
