Possible developments in traffic signal techniques
The paper discusses possible developments in traffic signal techniques in two categories; those which may be accomplished in the near future and for which much of the research and development work has been done, and those which may be achieved in the more distant future provided research in the meantime indicates that they are economically worthwhile. In the first category are developments which are designed to increase the flexibility and usefulness of conventional signal systems and include, amongst others, automatic means of preventing 'blocking' of intersections, improved signal control for high speed roads and methods to improve driving conditions in coordinated signal systems. In the second category automatic lane direction control is discussed and the use of electronic computers to control all the signals in a network of intersections (A).
