ESTIMATING SPEED SAMPLE SIZES

MANY TRAFFIC STUDIES REQUIRE THE COLLECTION OF A SAMPLE OF SPEEDS IN ORDER TO ESTIMATE A SPECIFIED POPULATION SPEED PARAMETER. IT IS CRUCIAL TO THE VALIDITY OF THE STUDY THAT THE SIZE OF THE SAMPLE OF SPEEDS COLLECTED SHOULD BE LARGE ENOUGH FOR THE POPULATION SPEED PARAMETER TO BE ESTIMATED FROM THE SAMPLE STATISTIC WITH THE REQUIRED AND PREDETERMINED ACCURACY. IT IS ALSO DESIRABLE THAT EXCESSIVELY LARGE SAMPLE SIZES SHOULD NOT BE COLLECTED AS THIS INCURS UNNECESSARY FIELDWORK AND EXPENSE. A PROCEDURE IS PRESENTED BY WHICH VEHICLE SPEED SAMPLE SIZES MAY BE RELIABLY ESTIMATED DIRECTLY FROM THE DEGREE OF CURVATURE OF THE HIGHWAY LOCATION IN QUESTION. EXAMPLES OF THE USE OF THIS PROCEDURE ARE GIVEN. /AUTHOR/
