Evaluation of the introduction of a priority road system in metropolitan Adelaide
The study consisted of three stages of identical design; drivers drove the experimental car over a predetermined route while their physiological and vehicle control reactions were monitored. The subjects were also asked to perform a secondary task. The stages were carried out before the introduction of priority roads, during the settling down period immediately after their introduction and finally after the priority road system had been operating for nine months. A marked decrease in driving demand and apparent difficulty was found between the first and third stages. However this could have been due to a variety of factors, and was probably only partly caused by the introduction of priority roads (a).
