Minimal reinforcement of right slab bridges

This paper describes theoretical and experimental investigations of the structural behaviour of right slab bridges simply supported on two parallel edges and free on the remaining two edges. Initially, a typical slab bridge was designed by the working stress method to the requirements of the National Association of Australian State Road Authorities (NAASRA) bridge design specification. Alternative slab designs using yield line analysis showed considerable reductions in the amount of reinforcement required. One tenth scale models of the slab bridge, designed by yield line analysis, were tested to assess the influence of various reinforcement layouts on the structural behaviour. The results of the tests revealed that various reinforcement arrangements were acceptable in terms of both load carrying capacity and serviceability. They also confirmed that a considerable saving in the amount of reinforcement could be made compared with the requirements of working stress design.
