A note on evaluating road safety policy

For the rta, and any other government agency concerned with increasing the social and economic welfare of the community, objective evaluation could have something like the following aims: (a) to guide its decision makers in their efforts to select and recommend the most suitable road safety policies; (b) to provide its decision makers with objectively based and quantified evidence to justify the policies they recommend; (c) to estimate the net value to the community, that is the increase in economic and social welfare, from implementing a road safety proposal; and (d) to identify, quantify and rank alternative road safety policies and proposals. Report includes paper 'cost of a road fatality' presented at a seminar held at the Bureau of Transport Economics on 12 December 1972.
