Current developments and future trends in road safety in Australia

Road accidents arise from the interaction between vehicles, the environment in which they are driven and the human element. Since 1970 an extensive program of research covering all these aspects has been undertaken by the Department of Transport. The department provides technical and secretariat support for the Australian Transport Advisory Council and its specialised committees. These have an important safety role and, for example, the Australian design rules for motor vehicle safety, endorsed by atac, provided the basis for the improvement in occupant safety which has followed the introduction of compulsory seat belt wearing. The results of the research being undertaken by the department represent an important contribution to the commonwealth's involvement (a).
