Future methods of motor vehicle occupant protection

I see the main immediate changes in occupant protection as being centred on developments of the seat belt concept, with improvements in comfort as well as performance, and with movement towards self applying, or "semipassive" belts. Crash studies have shown how important it is to look for improved methods of side impact protection, in particular the protection of the head, and to a slightly lesser extent the chest. In doing this, we must look once again at the "aggressiveness" of the structures which cars hit, because within the limits of realistic construction it is simply not possible to protect occupants against some sorts of impact (a).
