Design of seat belts for reliability

Seat belt failures in the customer's hands can be minimised through the use of a disciplined approach to the design, manufacturing and assembly processes. In this paper, one such formal approach is given together with a summary of environmental, manufacturing and assembly design limitations. Finally, some of the design improvements made in a current seat belt are discussed to illustrate the design approach and give some idea of the difficulties facing design engineers in the quest for reliability.
