The future of vibratory compaction of asphalt in Australia

The past and current use of vibratory compactors in Australia is discussed. Specifications for compaction of asphalt are presented to compare past practice with current trends. Examples of compaction results obtained on local jobs are used to support overseas cases in which it is proposed that compaction methods using vibratory compactors can achieve specified pavement densities in bituminous plantmix. The limitations on checking pavement densities using cored samples is recognised and the use of non-destructive test methods to analyse compaction procedures is supported. The lack of specific information based on experience in Australia supports the case for a closely-controlled test programme to assess compaction methods. (A)
