WARTIME CHANGES IN VOLUME AND COMPOSITION OF TRAFFIC ON RURAL ROADS IN THE UNITED STATES

MORE THAN 500,000 VEHICLES WERE COUNTED AND CLASSIFIED, AND MORE THAN 50,000 TRUCKS WERE WEIGHED. TRAFFIC BY ALL VEHICLES INCREASED EACH YEAR FROM 1936 THROUGH 1941, BUT DROPPED SHARPLY IN 1942. SINCE 1940, THERE HAS BEEN AN INCREASE IN THE VEHICLE-MILES OF EMPTY VEHICLES AND A DECREASE IN THE VEHICLE MILES OF LOADED VEHICLES, ALTHOUGH THE AVERAGE WEIGHT OF THE LOAD HAS INCREASED.
