Sensitivity of the cost of a 183m span steel box girder to variation in design rules
This paper describes a programme to design a steel box girder bridge, continuous over an infinite number of equal spans. The programme is used to investigate the effects in cost, of changes in the criteria used for the design of the stiffened panels forming the flanges and webs. It is shown that significant changes in the severity of the design rules cause only moderate changes in total cost. A brief discussion is included of the relationship between the designs produced by this programme, and those required by merrison rules (a).
