Use of koni shock absorbers on ARRB roughness trailer

A trailer based NAASRA roughness meter had been previously developed by ARRB, but it had not been possible to obtain a direct relationship with the readings of the standard NAASRA vehicle. Therefore, a study was made of the shock absorbers (koni) used. The shock absorbers were laboratory tested at their 'NAASRA count' setting, their force/ displacement characteristic recorded and means of altering this characteristic were examined. It was demonstrated that shock absorbers which were nominally the same would not necessarily give the same NAASRA roughness counts. However, when two pairs of shock absorbers were matched in the laboratory, it was possible to closely match the results from the standard NAASRA vehicle. (A)
