Pavement markings: principles and practices - some do's and don'ts

The purpose of pavement markings are considered and the extent to which current practice in pavement markings in Australia achieves these purposes is discussed. Markings are classified as longitudinal or transverse lines (to the driver) and others ie, messages and symbols. The requirements for good visibility of all classes of markings are discussed. Several examples of malpractice in message and symbol marking application are described and illustrated (a).
