Research into road vehicle operating costs and its application in Australian conditions

Studies of vehicle operating costs are reviewed, with particular reference to the context within which their results would be applicable. Vehicle costs were seen to be either time dependent or use dependent. Vehicle depreciation, for instance, was seen to depend on both aspects. Maintenance, tyre, fuel and oil consumption studies are assessed and catalogued. A procedure for updating cost functions on the basis of unit cost indices is presented, together with some suggestions for further research in the general area of vehicle operating costs.
