A study of the literature on pelican crossings

The potential for Australian use of the pelican (pedestrian light controlled) crossing, a major form of pedestrian crossing in the United Kingdom, is reviewed. The effect of installing similar crossings in Perth, Western Australia is discussed. The crossings are studied in terms of their development, relative safety, effect on pedestrian and vehicle flow, influence on road user behaviour and suitability for elderly pedestrians and children. Proposed alterations to the method of operation of the crossings are reviewed. Recommendations for further research are made. (a)
