Motorcycle accidents and alcohol use

Police accident report data was examined for 76 killed motorcyclists and 1432 injured motorcyclists involved in accidents during 1974 in Victoria. In April 1974, legislation became effective requiring a sample of blood to be taken from any person admitted to hospital after a road accident. However, the sample provided to the police was not always analysed for alcohol. Only for 18 killed motorcyclists and 93 injured motorcyclists was a blood alcohol level recorded. For the 18 killed motorcyclists, 17 BAC levels were over 0.05 mg/100 ml, and 11 were over 0.15 mg/100 ml. For the 93 injured motorcyclists, 80 were over 0.05 mg/100 ml, and 33 were over 0.15 mg/100 ml.
