In depth study of pedestrian accidents

A representative sample of 40 pedestrian accidents were investigated at the scene in the Adelaide metropolitan area by multidisciplinary teams from the Road Accident Research Unit of the University of Adelaide. These accidents are reviewed and discussed in relation to characteristics of the pedestrians and drivers (eg, age, sex, drunkenness, medical aspects) and road traffic factors such as street lighting, layout, and wet road conspicuity of pavement markings. Wider use of raised median strips and pedestrian crossings, as well as speed limit reduction in urban areas, are advocated as accident prevention measures.
