South Australian experience in traffic data collection and analysis

The Highways Department of South Australia is the principal road construction authority for the state and is involved in the collection and analysis of various kinds of traffic data. The purposes for this traffic data collection are given and the main types of routine and special traffic surveys are described. Routine traffic surveys include permanent meters, intersection turning counts, coverage counts and classification counts. Special surveys include origin and destination, travel time, intersection delay, and spot speed surveys. The whole traffic data collection organisation, the equipment used and its associated servicing facilities are described. Permanent meter sites were originally selected on a random basis on sealed arterial and subarterial roads according to a method proposed foldvary (1) with subsequent modification after analysis of early results. Data analysis for all types of traffic surveys and the presentation of results are discussed. (A)
