Prediction of the impact on the environment of noise and air pollution from road traffic: interim report no 2, evaluation of noise prediction methods - progress to June 1978

This report describes the progress made with project wmr 74/16 in the four years since its commencement. Four noise prediction methods, three from Britain and one from the u s a have been tested with data from sixteen sites where full 18 hour noise measurements and traffic data were collected. The method giving least discrepancy between predicted and measured noise levels is the doe/ walsh office "calculation of road traffic noise". However, the over prediction that occurs with this method suggests that some modification to the basic formulae could improve accuracy. An Australia wide collection of data by a NAASRA working group should lead to recommendations along these lines. (A)
