Finite element method - introduction

This introduction gives the historical background of the finite element method, indicates its applications to a variety of boundary value and initial value problems in engineering, its applications in geomechanics, methods of analysis (displacement method, equilibrium method, mixed method, hybrid method) and description of finite element method. It also gives basic steps in finite element analysis, and discusses finite element division, representation of infinite media, boundary conditions and external loads.
