Problems in a marine environment

The paper discusses the problem of rusting in reinforced concrete buildings situated within 500 metres of the oceanfront. Methods of rectification are discussed separately for columns, beams, soffits of slabs, edges of slabs, tops of slabs. The first area in which breakdown occurs is exposed edges of slabs, followed by exposed strings of stairs, exposed beams and columns, and soffits of slabs. Apart from the use of hot dipped galvanized reinforcement, which is not only expensive, but if used only in exposed areas, results in many line areas in which galvanized reinforcements and standard reinforcements meet, a number of other recommendations are made.
