A study of the operation of large combination vehicles (road trains) ; working party report no 1: definitions, dimensional limitations, mechanical requirements, operational requirements

The 56th (November 1976) meeting of NAASRA established a project committee to review the operation of large combination vehicles. The committee set up a working party to: 1) define the mechanical and operational requirements for the safe operation of road trains. 2) Recommend permit conditions for road trains. 3) Recommend practical inspection and policing procedures for the enforcement of the mechanical requirements. 4) Develop guidelines for use in assessing the suitability of routes for operation of road trains. 5) Report on any other appropriate matters which affect the operation of road trains. The working party has taken the NAASRA ERVL and the oceanics Australia recommendations and findings and examined these, in discussions with industry representatives, with the aim of producing model permit conditions for road trains throughout Australia. The task has been divided into a number of sections, namely: dimensional limitations, mechanical requirements, operating requirements and conditions, mechanical inspections, administrative procedures, route selection criteria. This report covers the first three sections.
