Current approaches to the manufacture, construction and design of bituminous stabilised bases

Bituminous stabilisation in Australia has been mainly concerned with improvement of moist or wet materials which would be considered substandard for the base of lightly trafficked pavements or for subbases and this particular application is discussed. Incorporation of the bituminous binder in moist or wet aggregates is described, as well as design procedures, including properties of material to be stabilised, choice of binder content, optimum water contents for mixing and compaction, curing of compacted mix, mechanical testing of cured specimens to assess strength, and assessing resistance to water action.
