The Australian market for passenger motor vehicles, revised projections, 1977 to 1985

For the purposes of the study, passenger motor vehicles comprise new motor cars and station wagons as published by Australian Bureau of Statistics. The present paper contains a summary of the major areas in which the commissions' statistical model has been updated since the publication of its 1975 study and sets out revised projections for the period 1977 to 1985. The statistical model attempts to explain the level of sales of new passenger vehicles, in total and by type of vehicle, on a quarterly basis in terms of a number of factors which influence demand for new vehicles and the availability of supplies. The model performs particularly well in estimating the total market, not only in following the general trends in the market but also in estimating the timing and extent of peaks and troughs. Projected sales for 1977 are 2% below 1976 sales level although it appears that actual sales will be substantially lower from this. Sales are projected to increase steadily from 1978 to 1985 at a rate of approximately 18,000 vehicles per year.
