Research studies on driver reaction time: final report

This report on "reaction time" was prepared in response to the resolutions of the 54th NAASRA conference. Following a literature study of 41 articles, listed in section 7, it was concluded that the research carried out to date lacks sufficient information to provide adequate evidence on perception evaluation and fully to substantiate the current NAASRA standard of 2.5 Seconds. Information sought from the various member authorities regarding currently practised values of reaction time applied within their road design policy, suggested that only the New South Wales Department of Main Roads departed from the current NAASRA practice on rural two lane roads and urban roads where 1.5 Seconds is applied.
