Transportation systems, n+1 ways only

The existing code of the traffic engineer is to provide a transportation system for the "conveyance of passengers and goods in an orderly, safe and economic manner". During the time in which the transportation planning profession has developed, 15 to 20 years, this task has been tackled in two ways; modelling techniques to predict future transport demands and development of techniques to handle those demands. This paper addresses the latter, that is transport systems and technology. In order to consider the way ahead it is here necessary to review the past and consider the current practices.
