Report on visit to South Africa and Europe, September 1979
This report records a visit to South Africa, Austria, Belgium and the United Kingdom in September, 1979. The 3rd CAPSA conference is briefly described with comments on papers of special relevance to Australia and a visit to the HVS is described. It is concluded Australia could and should contribute to CAPSA in 1984 and that the HVS is an excellent pavement testing device. The 16th PIARC congress is described with special reference to conference sessions on testing, low cost roads and maintenance. It is concluded that PIARC is a political/ policy meeting rather than a technical meeting. Several suggestions for action should Australia be the venue for the xvii (1983) meeting are made of which the most important is the need to nominate Australians to the PIARC technical committees to obtain a sound knowledge and understanding of the workings of the association. Various technical discussions are reported covering information services for South East Asia and the Indian Ocean region, a visit to the Belgium centre for road research and pavement research at TRRL and Nottingham University. The report has a separate attachment.
