OECD Road Research Program, Research Group CM4, 'Use of marginal aggregates', report on the 2nd meeting, 8-10 May, 1979 and associated visits

This report describes the author's visit to Europe in May 1979 to attend the second meeting of the OECD road research program, research group cm4 'use of marginal quality aggregates', and associated visits made to finland, sweden, UK and France. The second meeting of research group cm4 was a working meeting at which the first draft of the group's report was discussed and modified. In each country, the authority dealing with road research was visited and work on aggregates and test methods was discussed. ARRB Research on aggregates is of quite high standard, and further work on weathered materials which are not a major problem in the countries visited, should be encouraged. In finland and sweden, deposits of marginal quality rock mentioned in the reports of these countries to research group cm4, were inspected. Observations in sweden support the view that if marginal quality roadbase is used, the surfacing must be maintained in good and impermeable condition. Some quarries in England, operated by amey roadstone corporation, were also visited.
