Roads - an existing community asset

The report is the text of a talk to a division of the Australian road federation. It emphasises the fact that roads are a major community asset, the use of which needs continual reexamination. It suggests that roads and vehicles are essential parts of our current way of life and that they pervade all we do. It notes that our current decisions are playing a major role in determining the future form of our cities. It highlights the problems of constructing in existing areas of our cities and discusses community reaction to road construction in these areas. It notes the fact that communities are living, evolving things that grow around their components. The report suggests that our communities have only two options. Firstly, they may ignore their road systems and thus close down or, secondly they must be prepared to utilise high technology less profligate vehicles and to charge road users operating costs which fully and properly reflect the costs of those operations to the community.
