Roads and road research in South East Asia - a personal perspective

A brief account of the author's contacts with various authorities in South East Asia precedes a statement of ARRB contributions to conferences relevant to road engineering in the region. A very brief description of the major highway authority in the various countries is then given with comparative statistics of area, population, road network length, vehicle population, gnp and Australian aid. Examples of problem areas and the current level of research leads to a statement of what ARRB could contribute and why it should. It is claimed that ARRB has the expertise and the access to resources to be able to make a useful contribution. The reasons for making a contribution are seen to be based on (1) moral grounds, (2) as a national responsibility as part of the South East Asian region, (3) as an extension and continuation of existing trading activities in the area. The author concludes by expressing a strong personal commitment to road research and development in South East Asia.
