Analysis of a questionnaire on the use of mechanically weak rocks as road pavement materials

This report presents an analysis of a questionnaire on the use of mechanically weak rocks which was circulated to local government engineers, state road authorities and other organisations in March 1978. Information was sought on the type and amount of mechanically weak rocks used, methods and costs of winning and construction, construction difficulties and the 'in service' behaviour of the materials. Replies were received from 391 organisations and were analysed by coding and computer sorting. The usage reported was approximately 5000 000 m3 per annum and sedimentary rocks were dominant. The replies were analysed for the following rock types - shale, sandstone, conglomerate, quartzite, limestone, basalt, granite, ridge and river gravel, and scoria, and showed some variation in methods, costs, difficulties and service performance with rock type.
