An analysis of a questionnaire on Australian practice in trench backfilling and reinstatement

In late 1977 the Australian Road Research Board undertook a study of trench backfilling and reinstatement in roads and footpaths with a view to defining possible future research. Questionnaires were circulated to public utilities, local government authorities and state road authorities on a nationwide basis. This report presents the results of two questionnaires. One questionnaire was directed to public utilities whilst another similar questionnaire was directed to local government authorities and state road authorities. The results are presented in detail as appendices. The authors summarise the responses in the report and draw general conclusions as to Australian practice in trench backfilling and reinstatement. A discussion on recent developments in Australia and overseas is provided and recommendations for future action are made. These recommendations are firstly, the undertaking of an educational program on excavation and compaction techniques for trenching operations; and secondly, state conferences to assess the practicability of developing a comprehensive and uniform code of practice.
