Investigation of accessibility and mobility in urban communities

This report attempts to clarify the definition and role of accessibility and mobility concepts in transport planning. These terms are shown to be conceptually distinct, albeit closely related. The wide variety of uses and measures of the concepts which have been applied in transport and urban planning are categorised into a coherent summary. Particular consideration is given to the selection of appropriate indicators for evaluation and social appraisal of the urban land use/ transport system. Several applications of these concepts to real world situations are reviewed, with particular emphasis on Melbourne examples. (A)
